As war loomed 75 years ago, Liverpool started evacuating its children. Catherine Jones and Tom Belger learn more about Operation Pied Piper.

When six-year-old Ray Evans lined up at school with his little bag, tightly clutching the hand of his older sister Elsie, he thought he was going on a day out.

Some of the other children in the queue even had buckets and spades with them.

But this was September 4, 1939, and the trip Ray was about to embark on wouldn’t see him home and tucked up in time for bed. Continue reading
