Imagine…

Imagine being a child who has to leave home with no idea of where you’re going and worse still, not knowing when or IF, you’ll ever see your family and loved ones again…

Evacuated Away from Home at Age 6!

Before the Last All Clear is the story of one young evacuee from Liverpool, England, who was sent to live in the Welsh town of Llanelli. Separated from his mother, brothers and sisters, six-year old Ray Evans, was dispatched to a series of families some of whom ignored, exploited and in some cases even abused him.

Pushed from pillar to post, he finally finds happiness with a family who make him so welcome that he is reluctant to leave when the war finally ends.

Set in a world of ration books, air-raid sirens and ever-present danger, Before the Last All Clear is a candid and direct account of wartime Britain as seen through the eyes of a child.

Listen to an Audio Excerpt:

This excerpt is short but Garry’s expert reading of it really brings the event to life. We hope you’ll enjoy listening to it… and by all means feel free to share this on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter etc., we certainly hope you will!

About the Narrator:

Garry Nichols is a native of Llanelli, he taught drama at the local high school and in fact taught the daughters of Eiuan Williams, Ray’s ‘foster brother’ from his last and happiest billet where he was finally treated as a real member of the family.

Garry graciously agreed to read an excerpt from the book at a presentation held at the Llanelli Regional Library to celebrate the book being voted the #1 Reader’s Choice Award in the Welsh Book Council’s Wales Reads campaign in 2008. The award is especially appreciated by Ray because it was based on votes submitted by readers.
